It all started @ 8:30 a.m. on Saturday in the lecture room of Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Coach Jeff was invited to speak on his squat/scoot style of mid-foot running to a group of 30 teens, parents, coaches & therapists. The group referred to is the CVH teen runners headed by medical social worker, Dan McGann. The programme uses physical activity (in this case, running) as part of the therapy for teens dealing with social anxiety disorder, depression & a variety of other mental health challenges. Coach Jeff has been a feature speaker to the group since its inception in September, 2006. It was an inspiring hour where the group were challenged to engage not only in regular physical activity beyond the confines of the clinic but also believing life is worth living. Coach Jeff left to a rousing ovation & overwhelmingly positive comments.
Then, it was off to the Runner’s Mark store in Port Credit, Ont., Canada for a 10:00 a.m. presentation on making the transition from ‘coffins’, minimalist shoes etc. to barefoot as a precursor to an upcoming 12 week clinic. There were 20 curious attendees who heard 1st from Jeff Ransome of Velocity Rehab (about gait analysis & research trends on ‘coffins’ vs. minimalist shoes vs. barefoot running & then from Coach Jeff on course content. He also led the group through a series of ‘preparation’ drills that will be an integral part of the clinic. The official start date is Monday, March 26 @ 6:30 p.m. There must be a minimum of 10 registered to go ahead with the programme. A few spots have already been claimed. Thus, register early if you are interested in making the transition to ‘less’ on your feet whilst running. Lance Todd of Barefoot Science finished off the presentation with a demonstration of his graded pad-insert proprioceptive mid-foot firing technology. It works in conjunction with strengthening the feet which then strengthen the calves, hamstrings, quads, gluts & back muscles. All in all, it was an informative, action-packed 11/2 hours!
Finally, @ 8:00 a.m. this morning (Sunday), the TOTT gang left the ATB road race start line for a full course (30 km) training run. This was a drop-down pace run with the troops finishing well below race pace over the last 3 kms. They also totally controlled the notorious hills of North Shore Blvd. (including the Valley of Death @ the 25.5 km. mark). Needless to say, they are ready for race day on March 25!
Just another laid back weekend for the coach!!:))
